Story of Shab e Meraj
On a fine night, when the darkness of the night naturally came into action and covered the sunlight of nature. When the night comes, living things who are awake in the daytime was preparing to go to bed. Our Prophet was not different from that, he too was preparing to go to bed after completing his prayers (Salat) in the house of Umme Hani in the blessed city of Makkah.
The story begins here, suddenly Prophet heard a voice and it was the voice he heard many times so far. It was the voice of the great angel Jibreel AS. Angel Gabriel Came and said,
“This night you have to perform a very unique journey and I have been ordered to remain with you. You will have to traverse different parts of the world mounted on an animal named Al-Buraq.”
“After some time, Angel Gabriel /Jibreel (AS) stopped Prophet Muhammad (saw) and said to perform the Salat. Muhammad (PBUH) get down from al-Buraq and performed Salat. Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) said, ‘Do you know where you just performed your prayer?’ Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) got confused and replied to him “No I don’t”. Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) said, ‘In Taibah (Madinah), that place where your travelers will go.’ After this, Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) got back onto Al-Buraq and they continued the journey.”
“Once again, Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) again asked Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) to stop and said, ‘Perform the Salat.’ Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his posterity once again got down from al-Buraq, and performed Salat there. Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) asked again Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), ‘Do you know where you just prayed?’ It is the Mountain of Sinai – the place where Prophet Musa / Moses (PBUH) spoke to Allah (SWT).”
“After sometime once again, Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his posterity ascended al-Buraq and continued. Shortly after sometime, Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) said, ‘Please get down and perform the Salat again.’ Then again Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) questioned, ‘Do you know where you just prayed this time?’ Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) replied “No I Don’t”, to which he answered, In Bait al-Laham (Bethlehem) – the place which is near to Baitul Maqdis and this is the place where Prophet Isa al-Masih (pbuh) was born.”
Then at last they reached Baitul Muqaddas, which is located in Zionist occupied Jerusalem nowadays and it is also known as The Masjid al-Aqsa (the Furthest Mosque) and Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), proceeded to tie the reins of al-Buraq to the exact same ring that other great Prophets (before him) used to tie their animal.
After this Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his progeny moved in the Masjid and it was here where he met Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and the rest of the Prophets (PBUT). All the prophets before him presented there gathered around him and they all proceeded to get ready for Salat. Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his posterity had no doubt that the Salat would be led by Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS), however when the lines for the Salat were being formed, Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) placed his hand on the shoulder of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and pushed him forward. Angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) also took part in the Salat behind him along with the other Prophets (PBUT).
This was the first part of the journey known as the Isra we’ve discussed sometime earlier. Now we’re going to discuss about the second part of the journey.
In the second part of his miraculous journey on the night of Shab e Meraj, he moved forward from this spot to the seven skies (heavens). Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), then observed the stars and the moving systems of the universe and conversed with the souls of the previous prophets, and also he met with the angels of the heavens (AS). Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw the Centre of the punishments and the blessings (hell and heaven) and became fully aware of the secrets of creation, the undefined extent of the universe and the signs of the Omnipotent Allah (SWT).
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his posterity, continued his journey again and soon reached Sidrat ul Muntaha (This is the boundary limit which no one can cross including the angel Gabriel / Jibreel (AS) also). There he found it fully covered with glory, magnificence and grandeur, and then he returned back by the way he had traveled. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), first came to Baitul Muqaddis and then to Makkah.
It was daybreak when he returned at the house of Umm-e-Hani from Al-Buraq which had taken him into space. Holy Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his posterity related this matter to Umm-e-Hani and the following night, he made it known to the gatherings of Quraysh as well. The word of his travels spread from mouth to mouth amongst all the groups, all over the arab and now more than ever, the Quraysh were very upset (with him).
According to an old tradition they were following, the Quraysh leaders asked the justification of its structure, and Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his posterity, not only explained the physical particularities of Baitul Muqaddis, rather than that, he even informed them of the event that took place between Baitul Muqaddis and in Makkah also.
Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to them that he met some of the caravan of such and such (Names weren’t published) tribe who lost their camel in the desert and he asked them to give him water and Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) drank water from their container. So they asked about the Quraysh caravan and he replied to them that “he saw them at Taim”. So Quraysh became very excited and it was not long after that the travelers (of that caravan) reported the exact events (as had occurred).
